Eight ways you can become a master newsjacker

‘Going viral’ is the Holy Grail for all modern-day marketers, but actually achieving the widespread sharing of your content is much more easily said than done.

Enter newsjacking – a technique marketers use to piggyback on a developing trend by publishing related content to capitalise on a rush of interest in the topic.

Here are eight way you can become better at newsjacking.

1. Monitor

To be an effective newsjacker, you need to monitor the news throughout the day to identify trending stories as they break. Using a reliable tool, such as BuzzNumbers or Brandtology, will make it easier when it comes to receiving the latest news stories and posts from your favourite publications, blogs and YouTube channels together in one easy-to-read dashboard. They are usually complete with customised alerts to make sure you never miss a beat.

2 Look out for trending topics

Your success as a newsjacker depends on your ability to identify a trending topic as it’s breaking, and jump aboard early before your voice is lost in the throng. Social listening tools provide real-time analytics that reveal exactly what’s hot in social media before it cools off.

3. Google Trends

Google Trends is a free tool that allows you to see trending Google searches at a glance. You can break down trends by category and location to identify the breaking stories and topics that are gaining traction in your market in real time. You can also track trend performance over time and by region, and see what’s trending on YouTube.

4. Identify keywords

Once you’ve identified a trending topic to jack, you’ll need to find the right keywords that will propel your content to the top of search engine results. Keyword research tools that integrates with Google Trend predictions are very useful when it comes to identifying keywords that will make your content a search superstar.

5. Think about SEO

With a trending topic to weigh in on and a list of relevant keywords up your sleeve, it’s time to get writing. If you’re publishing to a WordPress blog, it's worth thinking about the keywords that are likely to get picked up by Google and ensure the content is optimised for search engine performance.

6. Strong visuals

Posting memes and image content that relate to a hot topic is an effective way to piggyback on a viral trend. There are plenty of easy-to-use cloud-hosted photo editing tools, that allow you to quickly create attention-grabbing custom images optimised for social sharing on platforms Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. Think about interesting layouts, colours and engaging text.

7. Live streaming

Don’t forget to include video content in your newsjacking mix. Live streaming Apps such as Periscope and Meerkat allow you to stream video straight from your smart phone for live broadcast on the Internet, so you can respond instantly to breaking stories and developing trends in real time. Your followers can also re stream your video to their audiences to spark viral sharing.

8. Keep on top of social media posting

Social media is a key platform that enables you to put your newsjacking content in front of as many eyes as possible, as quickly as possible. It is easy to control if you sign up to a social media management tool that allows you to post to all of your social media accounts from one dashboard, with automated publishing so you can keep the content coming long after you leave the office.
