#Oscarssowhite continues to dominate Academy Award discussions on social media, even as winners are announced

With 2,202,668 social media mentions in the past week, The Oscar Awards dominated global discussions – but it wasn’t the films that stole the spotlight, with the lack of diversity among nominees trending in the lead up to the event and #oscarssowhite mentioned alongside many online conversations today. Host Chris Rock famously re-wrote his opening monologue in mid-January after the all-white nominees were announced, and aimed to make the audience feel “uncomfortable” about the “different kind of racism” Hollywood offers up.

Australian-made Mad Max Fury Road was the most mentioned nominated film on social with over 20,000 mentions today, beating out Best Picture winner Spotlight, which focused on sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and was mentioned just over 10,000 times at last count in the same time period, and The Revenant, a Best Actor favourite and eventual winner for Leonardo Di Caprio. #OscarsSoWhite has been mentioned nearly 100,000 times today on social media, fuelled by Chris Rock’s monologue and an ongoing conversation about diversity in Hollywood.
