The future in a "fragmented media world"

Leading media authorities from 63 Asia Pacific member states and more than 200 broadcasting institutions have met in Macau, China to discuss the future of the media industry in the region.

Representatives from government bodies and major broadcasting companies came together on October 27 and 28 to attend a number of forums at the 51st annual Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) General Assembly. The theme of this year's event was 'The Future of Radio-Television Broadcasters in a fragmented media world'.

The aim of the conference this year was to discuss how traditional media companies and influencers can address the challenges they are facing due to fast-changing media technology. At the forums, leading experts spoke on ways audience behaviour is changing and how broadcasters can modify their services to keep pace.

"For the broadcast industry, there has been effort given by some of the members of ABU to develop new technologies and put them into the market," Chui Sai On, chief executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region, explained at the official opening of the event.

"The Asia Pacific broadcasters have also excelled in developing content that suit their audiences. Their achievements shape the way we see television and listen to radio today."

Beyond the media intelligence developments already being embraced in the Asia Pacific media market, attendees at the conference were urged to consider what more could be done to improve effectiveness and sufficiency in a turbulent media industry. 

"The proliferation of platforms allows our audiences to choose the content they want and when, where and how to view or listen to what we create for them," Jose Manuel Rodrigues, chairman of conference host TDM, said.

"As public broadcasters we need to ask ourselves how can we best serve audiences in the digital era? We need to discuss how the future is going to be like for us, broadcasters, in this new fragmented media world."
